As someone who travels to Europe often—especially in spring—I can tell you: May is hands-down one of the best times to go. The weather is pretty much perfect.

It’s warm enough to enjoy long days exploring charming old towns and outdoor cafés, but not too hot to walk around comfortably. Even better, the rainy season has usually passed, and those heavy summer crowds haven’t rolled in just yet.

Everything feels fresh and alive. And don’t even get me started on how picturesque it all is. Europe in spring is just… delightful.

Personally, I think European cities are at their most magical in May. Flower boxes are overflowing, parks are in full bloom, and there’s this feeling in the air—like the cities are waking up after a long winter nap.

May is honestly one of the best times to visit Europe. The weather is warm but not too hot, flowers are in full bloom, and the long days make it perfect for sightseeing.

1. Lucca, Italy

If you’re a lover of Medieval cities and delicious Italian food, Lucca, Italy should be on your must-visit list of places in Europe.

Located in Tuscany, Lucca is a great hub to explore the surrounding countryside, but there is plenty to do for a standalone destination as well.

Your first activity in Lucca should be to spend some time walking the city– specifically the Mura di Lucca—the medieval fortress walls that surround the city. From here you can see many of Lucca’s top attractions: the famous towers like Torre Guinigi (the Tree Tower), the Cathedral San Martino, the Palazzo Pfanner, the botanical gardens, and the grassy park outside the walls.

Then, when you stroll the narrow alleys and streets of Lucca, you can take a better look.

You must also visit some of Lucca’s most famous squares or piazzas. The circular Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, built around what used to be an amphitheater, has some of the best restaurants in Lucca and always has a lively atmosphere.

Outside of the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, try Bistro d’Antoine which serves amazing dishes typical of the region such as Tordelli Lucchese, a large ravioli-like pasta filled with meat, Swiss chard, and cheese.

3. Stockholm, Sweden

A definite must-visit place in Europe for your 2026 travels is Stockholm, Sweden.

Sweden’s capital is not only rich in culture and history, but there are also plenty of fun activities in Stockholm to keep you busy throughout your stay.

For example, one place you won’t want to miss out on visiting while in Stockholm is Vasa Museum. The Vasa was a warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged in 1961. Now, it’s the centerpiece of the museum and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Stockholm.

7. Český Krumlov, Czech Republic: The Most Unique Must-Visit Place in Europe for 2026

Český Krumlov is a beautiful old city in South Bohemia in the West of Czechia that has to make your list of the best places to visit in Europe! The city was founded in the 13^th century. The heart of the city is the river Vltava, which meanders through it.

The city, which is also on the UNESCO World Heritage list, still has a medieval street plan with over 300 buildings in Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic architectural styles.

A walking tour is a must to see the historical buildings and cobblestone streets.

The city has the second-largest castle in Czechia. You can climb up the tower of the castle, with amazing views of the city. Watch the bears residing in the moat of the castle. Further, there are several museums worth your time such as the Egon Schiele museum or the torture museum.

Český Krumlov in Winter is extra magical because then it’s covered in a layer of snow.

Depending on how you choose to travel, Český Krumlov is between 2-3 hours away from Prague. You can obviously get there by car, but could also take the train, RegioJet, or FlixBus as well.

8. Cologne, Germany

If you’re looking for a must-visit destination in Europe for 2026 that’s perhaps lesser known than some of the bigger cities, head to Cologne, Germany.

Fly into the International airport and grab a train to the city- which is easily reachable from most European cities like Amsterdam or Paris.

As soon as you step off the train in the center of Old Town, you’re confronted with one of the most iconic landmarks of the city, the Cologne Cathedral. This magnificent gothic structure is set amongst a beautiful square that comes alive with festivities during the Christmas season.

Just a short walk down the nearby Rhine river, you’ll find numerous restaurants and bars that provide outdoor seating.

One of the best things to do in Cologne is to take a guided brewery tour and sample some of the finest local beers. The Chocolate museum is also a must-do on any chocolate lover’s itinerary.

Germany is known for its meat dishes, and there are many steak houses and other specialty dining restaurants. If you don’t eat meat, you can still enjoy local delicacies. Himmel un Ääd (Heaven and earth) is a vegetarian-friendly dish made of apple pieces and mashed potatoes.

9. Turin, Italy

Turin is an underrated Italian destination where you can easily fill up a vacation itinerary.

International flights arrive daily at Turin’s airport, though you can also get there by train from Milan.

On one hand, it’s a royal city – the main seat of the House of Savoy and home to many of its UNESCO-listed palaces and villas.

On the other, it is an industrial and cultural hub – the birthplace of world-class brands like Fiat and Lavazza, a chocolate powerhouse, and where vermouth, along with the aperitivo tradition, came to life.

Start by visiting the Savoy’s residences, including the Palazzo Reale and Villa della Regina. Continue to Turin’s mindblowing museums, such as the National Museum of Cinema (the tallest in the world), the Egyptian Museum, and the National Automobile Museum.

10. Funchal, Madeira

There’s something about Madeira that feels completely magical, and the capital city of Funchal is no exception. Set on the edge of a rugged volcanic island in the Atlantic, Funchal is where lush gardens, cliffside views, and colorful festivals come together in the most delightful way.

May is one of the absolute best times to visit. The weather is warm but not scorching, and the island is at its blooming best thanks to the famous Flower Festival.

Expect elaborate floral carpets lining the streets, vibrant parades, live music, and bursts of color everywhere you turn. Even if you’re not there for the festival, you’ll find that Funchal in May feels calm, welcoming, and full of life.

Spend your mornings wandering the old town’s cobblestone streets, visiting the Mercado dos Lavradores for local fruit and flowers, or hopping on the cable car up to Monte. At the top, you’ll find the Monte Palace Tropical Garden—one of the most stunning botanical spaces in Europe.

Then, for something truly unique, take a traditional wicker toboggan ride back down the hill (yes, it’s a thing—and it’s fun!).

If you’re into the outdoors, this is also the perfect time for hiking one of the island’s levadas (irrigation trails) or heading out on a dolphin- or whale-watching tour. The water is calm and clear, making May ideal for boat trips and coastal exploring.

And don’t miss out on the food—fresh seafood, passionfruit everything, and poncha, the island’s signature sugarcane rum drink. It’s strong, sweet, and exactly what you need after a long day of sightseeing.

The best place to stay in Funchal is somewhere that lets you soak in the views while still being close to the action. I recommend looking for hotels in or near the old town or along the Lido promenade.

One of my favorite places is Castanheiro Boutique Hotel. It’s centrally located in the historic district, just a short walk from Funchal’s main attractions and waterfront. The rooftop pool has panoramic views over the city and ocean, and the rooms are modern but full of local charm. Plus, the breakfast spread is the kind you’ll want to wake up early for.

11. Lapland, Finland: An Adventurous, Whimsical Must-Visit Destination

If you’re looking for an amazing destination in Europe to visit, look no further than Lapland.

Located in the far north of Finland, Lapland is a winter wonderland where you can enjoy activities like dog sledding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and of course, hunting the Northern Lights.

Or, if you prefer avoiding the cold snow and dark nights and love the summer, head to Lapland in June for the midnight sun. There is no better place to experience 24 hours of daylight than Lapland.

Getting to Lapland is pretty easy as Rovaniemi is easily accessed by plane from many European airports, or you can take the Santa Claus Express night train from Helsinki and wake up in magical Lapland.

No matter whether you choose to venture to Lapland in the winter or the summer, you will love crossing the Arctic Circle, visiting Santa in his office, and finding some unique nordic animals at the Ranua Zoo, including the famous Arctic Fox.

When you’re in Lapland, make sure to try some of the local cuisine.

Reindeer and salmon are two of the main ingredients in many traditional dishes, such as reindeer stew and smoked salmon with potatoes.

For a sweet treat, don’t miss out on cloudberry jam or leipajuusto (Finnish cheese curds). Cloudberry wine or Lingonberry Vodka are also a must.

When looking for somewhere to stay, an amazing accommodation is the Arctic Treehouse Hotel. 12. Bangor, Northern Ireland

Bangor, in Northern Ireland, is coming in hot as a must-visit place in Europe this year.

In 2022, Bangor was among eight towns in the United Kingdom, and the only town in Northern Ireland, to be officially awarded city status at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Since then, there has been a lot of hype along with investment and development in the new seaside city.

Bangor is easily reachable via a short train ride from Belfast (about 30 minutes) or Belfast City Airport (about 20 minutes). 

As a seaside destination, Bangor-by-the-Sea has always been a large local weekend and holiday destination with its central marina, seafront fun park, and scenic coastal walks along the North Down Coastal Path.

In the last year, Bangor has added a new live music venue on the seafront and many new developments as the once sleepy suburban town is now drawing crowds from across UK and Europe. 

As a seaside destination, people also come for fresh seafood and the seaside cliches, such as the chip shops and ice cream vendors found along the harborwalk. There are also many cafes and restaurants where you can find the iconic Ulster Fry, which is the breakfast of choice in Northern Ireland.

13. Vik, Iceland

Vik, along the southern coast of Iceland, is one of the coolest places to visit during a trip to Iceland! is surrounded by some of the most majestic landscapes on the planet, with glaciers, black sand beaches, and dramatic cliffs. 

One of the most popular things to do in this tiny town is visit Reynisfjara, a black sand beach that has epic sea stacks jutting out of the Atlantic Ocean and cliffs formed by shockingly geometric columns of basalt.

In the summertime, this is an excellent place to spot puffins nesting and you can spot their babies (adorably called “pufflings”) as they take their first crack at flying out to sea.

While the beach is stunning, Iceland is also famously windy and chilly– so be sure to include some cozy layers on your Iceland packing list to bring along here!

The town of Vik is worth exploring as well, with the Instagram-famous Reyniskirkja Church; the Soup Company, which dishes up soup that will warm your soul; and, best of all, the adorable Skool Beans.

This charming stop, which is both a coffee shop and a micro-roaster, is located in a converted school bus and boasts both a wood-burning fireplace and a resident cat.

14. Valletta, Malta

Valletta is the heart of the Mediterranean.

Built in the 16th century, the Maltese capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to several Baroque palaces and churches. It’s also a hub of culture, playing host to several world-class exhibitions and performances.

There are plenty of things to do in Valletta. In fact, you might want to consider spending at least two days in the city.

You can get there by bus from any town or village in Malta.

If you enjoy history, make sure you wander around the historic city-center and visit the Museum of Archaeology, which hosts a wealth of prehistoric artifacts, some of which date back to 5000 BC. Meanwhile, St. John’s Co-Cathedral is a treasure trove of paintings and tapestries – plus, it’s home to the famous Caravaggio masterpiece, The Beheading of St. John the Baptist.  

If you enjoy tranquil escapes, you can head to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for a rest. Here, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Grand Harbour and the forts of St. Angelo and Ricasoli.

For lunch, grab a ftira from Nenu, the Artisan Bakery on St. Dominic Street. A ftira is a freshly baked loaf filled with a fresh tomato spread, olives, onions, capers, and tuna.

As the capital of Portugal, you can’t overlook Lisbon as one of the top destinations in Europe for 2026. The vibrant atmosphere, whimsical colors, and fun activities make it a must-stop on any highlights tour of Portugal or general Europe tour.

16. Zermatt, Switzerland

One of the must-visit places in Europe this year is definitely Zermatt. 

The small Swiss mountain village in the south of Valais borders Italy and is best known for the world-famous Matterhorn.

Zermatt is car-free. An arrival by train is therefore recommended.

Due to the high mountains surrounding the tourist resort and the many activities it offers in summer and winter, Zermatt is worth a visit at any time.

The world’s largest travel platform, Tripadvisor, has repeatedly awarded Zermatt with the Traveller’s Choice Award for “Best of the Best Destinations for Skiers in the world.”  Try your hand with a private ski lesson, and hit the slopes in this famous city!

The summer months offer not only outstanding hikes such as the famous Matterhorn Glacier Trail, but also numerous other outdoor activities. Absolutely worthwhile is the 30-minute railroad trip to the Gornergrat lookout point. 

From Gornergrat Platform at 3100m, there are over 20 four-thousand-meter peaks, in addition to the impressive Matterhorn and the Gorner Glacier, to admire.  

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, at 3883m.a.s.l. is the highest mountain station in the largest summer ski area in Europe, and it is open year-round for skiers. Here you’ll find the highest glacier palace with walkable crevasse in the world.
