Ultimate One Day in Inverness Itinerary: 9 Best Things to Do
Are you headed to Inverness for the day? I’ve got the perfect itinerary for you!
After traveling to Inverness many times over the years during my trips to Scotland, I’ve tried pretty much there is everything there is to do in the area! In this post, I’ve put together an amazing one day in Inverness itinerary so that you cover all of the best things to see, do, and try with just a day in the Highlands!
Inverness is often called the “Gateway to the Highlands.” It is one of the most visited cities in Scotland. Yet, somehow, Inverness has managed to be a city that so many want to visit…but hasn’t sold out to the tourists and become over-commercialized.
What I love about Inverness is that it combines all of the things that you might adore about a small town like charming cobblestone streets, quaint stores, and a walkable city center, with some of the things you might love about bigger cities like efficient transportation, lots of things to do, and delicious food and friendly locals.
Inverness just happens to be one of my favorite places in Scotland, and even though some people might say it’s overrated or not worth your time, I couldn’t disagree more. After all who doesn’t want to visit Loch Ness, search for Nessie, climb Urquhart Castle, and stroll along the River Ness?
Generally, I spend a couple of days in Inverness each time I visit, but this post will give you all the things that Inverness has to offer in one fantastic itinerary so that, even though you might not have all the time in the world, you still have such a great taste of the Inverness Loch Ness area!

How to Spend One Day in Inverness, Scotland
If I only had one day to spend in Inverness, here’s what I would pack my day full of:
1. Have Breakfast and Coffee at the Victorian Market
Begin your morning in Inverness with a stop for breakfast and some coffee at the Victorian Market. Right in downtown Inverness, this is a covered market with stalls, shops, and a food court-like area.
You might be able to find a few Scottish souvenirs or vintage finds here, but the true gem is the coffee at Milkbar. Every time I’m in town, I pop in not only for the delicious cup of coffee, but also for the friendly conversation. The locals who frequent this cafe are some of the nicest Scots around!
Grab a pastry (and a chicken and leek hand pie for later!) and meander around for a slow start to the day.

2. Take a Boat Tour of Loch Ness
Any trip to Inverness wouldn’t be complete without seeing the legendary Loch Ness.
And, while a boat trip tour on Loch Ness can be kitschy in a way, it’s also awesome! And being on the water gives you an amazing view of the Scottish Highlands.
Drive to Clansman Harbour (about 15 minutes outside of Inverness), and then hop on the Loch Ness by Jacobite round-trip boat ride of Loch Ness
Of course, don’t forget to…
😉Search for Nessie- The Loch Ness Monster
Spend some time searching for Nessie! The Loch Ness Monster is alive and well (or is it?) in the depths of Loch Ness.
During your boat tour, have a little bit of fun with traditional Scottish folklore and tales of old as you use “sonar” to search the depths of the loch for this mysterious creature.
You never know… you could be the next person to catch her on film!
3. Explore Urquhart Castle- One of Scotland’s Most Epic Castles
I am obsessed with Urquhart Castle; it is one of those places that is ten times better than you imagine it will be.
After you disembark your boat tour, climb up the hill to the visitor’s center and watch the short, immersive movie in the museum area of Urquhart Castle. (Trust me- I wanted to skip it, but it was so well done!). This will give you a great starting point for why this particular piece of architecture was such an important part of history in Scotland.
Once you’re finished, explore the castle ruins and learn all about the medieval history behind the battles for this amazing stronghold.
You’ll have the opportunity to climb turrets, see amazing views over Loch Ness, and walk along old castle walls. The educational exhibits here are so insightful.

4. Learn at Culloden Battlefield
Drive to Culloden Battlefield, the historic site where the fate of the Jacobites and the Highland clans effectively came to an end.
On this moor, in 1746, Scots battled with the crown for independence. The Scots were quickly defeated, ending Scotland as we knew it.
The exhibits at Culloden are incredibly well-done, shedding light on what those on both sides of the battle might have been thinking. They walk you through the timeline of that historic day, and there are many artifacts to see as well.
Finally, you can walk the actual battlefield, seeing the memorial cairn, the clan stones (there are always roses at Clan Fraser- no, I didn’t put any there!!! thought about it, though 😉), and even the flags marking the army lines.
Before you leave Culloden Battlefield, stop into their cafe and grab a bite to eat. They have a bunch of options like soup, sandwiches, and really great pastries. Plus, the most adorable teapots for some hot tea and biscuits!
⭐Tip: Culloden Battlefield also has hairy coos! See a few of the charming Highland Cows who roam the back section of the museum. Because…let’s face it, you can’t go to Scotland and not see hairy coos!

5. Visit Clava Cairns Standing Stones
About 5 minutes down the road from Culloden, you’ll find one of the ancient stone circles- Clava Cairns.
This burial site from the Bronze Age is an awesome place to visit- whether you’re an Outlander fan or not!
Clava Cairns is free to enter, and you won’t need more than about 15 minutes to peruse this site, walking around the three circles and burial mounds.

6. Explore Leakey’s Bookshop
Once you’ve finished with Clava Cairns, head back into Inverness city centre to visit Scotland’s largest used bookstore- Leakey’s Bookshop.
This isn’t just any old bookstore- it is a destination. Housed in an old cathedral, I was stunned by how much of an ambiance the spiral staircase and wood-burning stove creates.
Wander around Leakey’s for a bit, and you’ll find piles and shelves full of old books and prints about anything you can imagine.

7. Walk Around Inverness City Centre and High Street
One of the draws of Inverness city center is that it is incredibly walkable. Spend an hour or so popping in and out of whatever suits your fancy.
There are plenty of tourist stores, boutiques, charity shops, restaurants, and bars along the way, and this is a great place to find souvenirs!
High Street is the most popular street in Inverness. You’ll find stores like Primark, the Edinburgh Woollen Mill, and Thistle Do Nicely.
⭐ Tip: My favorite store in Inverness is the Isle of Skye Candle Company! It’s on High Street- stop in for a candle with a unique Scottish scent!

8. Enjoy a Tasty Dinner in Inverness
Inverness winds down early, so you may find yourself having an early dinner. Or, you might also want to indulge in afternoon tea while in Inverness since there is such an amazing variety of options!
Two great places in Inverness to try for dinner are:
Number 27 Bar and Kitchen
This restaurant has traditional Scottish and American dishes (with a twist!) and uses fresh ingredients. I love that the menu changes often. The ambiance in the restaurant is fantastic, but it is a small place, so make reservations!
The Mustard Seed
The Mustard Seed is one of the best restaurants in Inverness. It is located in a former church and serves delicious European dishes with a modern twist. It is a little more high-end than Number 27 Bar and Kitchen and has some incredible, elevated meals including a separate vegan menu if needed.
⭐ Tip: Remember that Inverness is a small city compared to others in Scotland. Make sure you check if reservations are available at your restaurant. And if they are- make them! The best restaurants in Inverness are always crowded.

9. Traditional Scottish Music, Nightlife, and Scotch Whisky!
If you do one thing on this itinerary- do this. Seriously, do not skip it.
Even if you’re not the “going out” type. This was the highlight of our ENTIRE two weeks in Scotland- not even kidding.
Head out to the Highlander bar for live music. The Highlander is located right in downtown Inverness, so it is within walking distance of most accommodations. And they have live music every night.
The traditional Scottish folk music left us breathless- couple that with an awesome atmosphere, friendly locals, and delicious Scotch whiskeys and craft beers? What more could you want?
We came back to the Highlander every single night we were in town, and I can’t wait to go back!
Another great place to try out for live music is Hootenanny’s. It is a little more of a dive bar vibe, but we loved it there, too!
⭐ Tip: My favorite Scotch whisky to try is on hand at both Hootenanny’s AND the Highlander. Even if you’re not a whisky drinker (I’m not!), have a glass of Caol Ila. When in Rome, right?!

Other Things to Add to Your Inverness One Day Itinerary
Depending on your interests and the time of year you are visiting, there are a few other things you could consider substituting or adding to your itinerary:
✔ Inverness Castle
Although it has stood above Inverness city center for what seems like forever, Inverness Castle has not been open to the public for a VERY long time!
The good news is that- starting in 2025- you will be able to visit Inverness Castle! It is currently undergoing a large renovation, turning it into an exhibit focusing on the history of the Highlands.
I, for one, can’t wait to see it once it opens, so you may want to put this on your radar, too!
✔ Inverness Botanic Gardens
If you’re interested in exposing yourself to local nature, the Inverness Botanic Gardens may be a spot to check out! Although it is a little bit of a walk outside of the city center, near Ness Islands, word has it that the gardens are beautiful.
They are open 7 days a week, all year long. Part of the garden is indoors in a greenhouse, and there is also a carp pond and a cafe on site.
✔ Day Trips From Inverness
Inverness is also a fantastic place to base yourself for a day trip, as it is the Gateway to the Highlands.
The following are your best options for day trips from Inverness:
Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan Castle Day Trip
Inverness is easily the most convenient place to take a day trip to Isle of Skye from. Many other cities in Scotland are just too far away.
This trip packs Isle of Skye (including Kilt Rock and Old Man of Storr) and the magnificent Eilean Donan Castle into just one day. Plus, it makes other stops at smaller places like the village of Portree or Locharron.
⭐ Book Your Day Trip to Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan here!
Tour of Northern Whisky Distilleries & Dunrobin Castle Day Trip!
Another popular day trip location from Inverness is to explore the vast number of distilleries up North.
On this small group tour, you’ll not only visit and sample at four distilleries (Glenmorangie, Balblair, Singleton, and Clynelish), but also tour Dunrobin Castle and gardens!

FAQ: One Day in Inverness Itinerary
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions that I get when it comes to spending one full day in Inverness, Scotland:
Is One Day in Inverness Enough?
One day in Inverness is enough time to see most of the main attractions in the area. However, If you have the time, I generally recommend that visitors stay at least two days, simply because it is a great location for slowing down and enjoying Scottish culture and the Highlands for a bit.
Is a Day Trip to Inverness Worth it?
Yes! A day trip to Inverness is worth doing, simply because you can see epic Scottish things like Loch Ness or Culloden Battlefield. Even if you can’t get into the city and meander around, a day trip to Inverness is still worth it just to see the Scottish Highlands.
Is Inverness a Walkable Town?
Inverness is a very easily walkable town. While not many of the larger attractions (Loch Ness, Culloden, etc) are within walking distance, the city streets, restaurants, shops, and hotels in Inverness are all easily accessible. The city is mostly flat and it is a beautiful place to stroll around leisurely.
Where to Avoid in Inverness?
I’ve meandered all around Inverness and have not found any places that you need to avoid. Overall, the city is incredibly compact and safe.
That being said, as always, use caution and only walk in well-lit areas. Be vigilant, and don’t traipse down deserted alleys!
How Much Time Do You Need in Inverness?
The perfect amount of time to spend in Inverness is two days. This is just enough time to see major sites, spend some time enjoying the city center, and get a taste of the Scottish Highlands.

How to Get Around During One Day in Inverness
I have packed this itinerary full of all of the best things to do in Inverness in one day, so you may be wondering just how to get around. Here’s what I recommend after traveling around Inverness and the local areas many times myself:
👣 Walking
In most cases, you’ll want to walk around Inverness when you can! Although there are some places where you’ll need to access other modes of transportation (like when you visit Loch Ness, for instance), you can definitely walk quite a bit!
Inverness city center is not particularly large, so walking is the best way to see the city.
🚗 Rent a Car
If you’re up for it, renting a car in Inverness is a great idea. I found the roads in Scotland to be pretty easy to drive on, all things considered.
This is a simple way to take care of all additional transportation easily. Don’t be afraid to try!
🚕 Taxis
Taxis are readily available in Inverness. I recently stayed right near the Inverness train station, and I found that cabs were waiting pretty much all the time, right outside of the station.
We took a taxi to Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns one day (and added wait time at Clava Cairns), and we paid about £25 total for 4 people! I found that the taxi fares in Inverness were incredibly reasonable.
⭐ Tip: Do NOT count on Uber being available in Inverness. While it is widely available in Edinburgh, I could not find one in Inverness ANYWHERE, despite trying many times to book one.
🚂 Trains
Once you’re in Inverness, you won’t need to utilize trains to get around unless you are traveling to a city or town that is farther away.
Trains do not connect to tourist attractions like Loch Ness.

Where to Stay With One Day in Inverness
Let’s be honest, where you stay can make or break an itinerary. After staying in Inverness, here are the properties I’d recommend:
🏨 Ness Walk
If you’re looking for an amazing stay in Scotland, try Ness Walk. It is an elevated property near the city center that provides the most exceptional service.
Best of all, it’s located within walking distance of many things, but it also has a distinct “countryside” vibe that invites so much relaxation. 10/10 recommend!

🏨 The Royal Highland Hotel
The Royal Highland Hotel is where you want to stay if you’re looking for convenience and easy access. I stayed here back in November, and it is legitimately right next to the Inverness train station.
The hotel itself has distinctly Victorian and historic interiors, beginning with the amazing staircase that is reminiscent of the Titanic right inside its doors. We loved grabbing a drink in the bar here, walking right outside and into the city center, and having easy access to just about everything.

🏨 Highland Apartments By Mansley
If you’re traveling with a few people or looking to stay in an apartment-style rental, this is the place!
It’s one of the top places my husband and I have ever stayed- right on High Street in Inverness. This apartment complex has one and two-bedroom options. Plus, they come with a full kitchen, and, often, with a balcony.
Ours was a super spacious penthouse suite complete with two bedrooms and a balcony overlooking the River Ness- it was stunning.

All in all, if you can get to Inverness, Scotland for a day, you should definitely do it!
Inverness is always at the top of my list of places I can’t wait to go back to in Scotland, largely for the reasons I mentioned above.
You just can’t oversell the history at Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns, the fun of chasing Nessie, and the peace of relaxing at a Highlands bar with traditional music in the background. Here, life is good!
