At night, the area comes alive. You’ll find a mix of traditional pubs, trendy bars, and eateries – many of them have changed little over the centuries, so they are packed with character.
Exploring Edinburgh’s Old Town is mostly free, though some attractions and tours within the area may charge an entry fee.

The zoo sits on a hillside about a 15-minute drive from the city center, and it’s home to everything from red pandas to giraffes and penguins. The daily Penguin Parade is a classic — watching them waddle down the path never gets old.
If you go, try to arrive early — it gets busy, especially on weekends and holidays. Bring comfy shoes, too; the grounds are quite steep in places. You can grab the Lothian Bus 12, 26, or 31 right from Princes Street, which drops you near the entrance.
This one’s worth a visit for the views alone. From the higher paths, you can see right across the city — and on a clear day, the Pentland Hills in the distance. If you have the time, I’d include it.

It’s not your typical romantic date spot, but it’s a great way to mix things up if you’ve been doing a lot of historic sightseeing. Plus, it’s indoors, so it’s perfect for a rainy day — which, let’s be honest, Edinburgh has plenty of.
🔥 Hot tip: book your tickets online ahead of time, especially during school holidays. The café inside is pretty decent too — great for a snack before or after exploring. And since you’re right next to Holyrood Park, you can pair it with a short hike up Arthur’s Seat if the weather’s nice.
