13 Best Winter Festivals and Christmas Markets in Scotland 2025
Having spent Christmas in Scotland twice before—and planning my return this year—I created this guide to share first-hand tips and practical advice for the Christmas markets in Scotland.
Because, let’s face it, something about the idea of twinkling lights, festive music, and the smell of mulled wine in the crisp air feels like the perfect antidote to winter gloom.
Sure, the weather in Scotland during December can be a bit grey and damp—but honestly, that only makes the markets and festivals feel more magical, in my opinion. The streets light up, everything is decorated and festive, and the little towns seem to come alive with holiday spirit.
There’s so much charm packed into this season. Some markets feel like scenes from a storybook, with carolers in cozy squares and stalls filled with handmade gifts and hot cider. Others are full of energy—think funfair rides, ice skating, and late-night shopping surrounded by glowing decorations.
I’ve done a ton of research to pull together the most up-to-date info, from big cities to tucked-away gems. Let’s dive into the best places to soak up the holiday magic across Scotland this winter.

Festivals and Markets in Scotland at Christmas
Here are a few of the best festivals and markets to attend in Scotland during the Christmas season:
1. Edinburgh Christmas Market
📍Location: East & West Princes Street Gardens, plus festive spots on George Street and St Andrew Square, nestled right under Edinburgh Castle—making for a picture-perfect holiday backdrop.
📅Dates: The city’s “Edinburgh’s Christmas” festival runs from November 15th, 2025 to January 4th, 2026, with both East and West Princes Street Gardens open daily during that time.
- The ice rink on George Street kicks off shortly after and runs through the season (exact dates are still pending).
- Some attractions like Castle Street’s market run on shorter dates, typically late November through Christmas.
🎄What is it: Edinburgh’s Christmas Market is festive magic; it’s one of my favorite places in Scotland during the holidays.
The heart of it all is in East Princes Street Gardens, where rows of alpine-style stalls spill over with handmade gifts, twinkling ornaments, and treats that smell so good you’ll be tempted to try them all. I’ll never forget taking in the sounds of sizzling bratwurst, the smells of mulled wine wafting through the air, and the general buzz and twinkling lights all around me.
Plus, you can’t leave out the massive Big Wheel ride and the soaring StarFlyer, which light up the skyline, giving you views of Edinburgh Castle that look like something straight out of a postcard.
If you wander over to West Princes Street Gardens, you’ll find the family funfair (perfect for littles), live carols at the Ross Bandstand, and plenty of spots to warm your hands on a mulled wine.
And if you’ve still got some festive energy left, head to St Andrew Square for the UK’s largest Christmas Tree Maze, Santa’s Stories for the little ones, and more hot chocolate than you can possibly drink.

🔥Book early– Ice skating, Big Wheel tickets, and Santa visits sell out fast—especially for evenings and weekends.
🔥Dress warm– Scottish winters are chilly—layer up, wear waterproofs, and comfortable shoes.
🔥EH postcodes get discounts– Locals with Edinburgh (EH) postcodes can get around 20% off on selected rides and attractions—just bring proof!
🔥Bring a reusable cup– Some stalls offer discounts (about 50p off) when you do!

2. Glasgow: George Square & St Enoch Square Winter Markets
📍Location: Glasgow City Center—two festive hubs just 10 minutes apart. One in George Square, right by the grand City Chambers, and the other nestled in St Enoch Square by the gleaming St Enoch Centre.
📅Dates:
- George Square Winterfest runs from November 23rd to January 5th.
- St Enoch Square Winterfest kicks off earlier—from November 9th to December 29th.
🎄What is it:
Glasgow at Christmas is stunning. George Square turns into this twinkling wonderland, with wooden chalets set against the backdrop of the City Chambers and the smell of sizzling raclette and sweet churros drifting through the air.
You can hop on the Ferris wheel for incredible city views, spin around on the vintage carousel, or lace up for a few laps on the ice rink while fairy lights sparkle overhead.
Just a short stroll away, St Enoch Square brings a bit more adrenaline—think whirling rides like the Blizzard, a runaway train for the kids, and even an ice-climbing wall if you’re feeling brave.
It’s also the spot to grab comfort food between rides: creamy mac ’n’ cheese, bratwurst fresh off the grill, or a stack of pancakes you’ll want to eat before they even cool down.
If you’ve got time, it’s worth visiting both spots in one evening—they’re close enough that you can soak up both locations without feeling rushed.
🔥Hot Tip: Toasty Beer Deal? Glasgow is the place—pints here can go as low as £5, some of the cheapest at any UK Christmas market.

3. Aberdeen Christmas Village
📍Location: Broad Street in the city center, with the artisan market tucked inside the Marischal College Quadrangle.
📅Dates: November 14th to December 31st, 2025, with the “Curated in the Quad” market running Friday to Sunday from November 15th to December 22nd.
🎄What Is It:
Aberdeen really knows how to do Christmas, with a bit of sparkle and a lot of heart. Broad Street turns into a festive playground with twinkling lights, a Ferris wheel, a few funfair rides, and an ice rink that’s perfect for a fun experience.
Just around the corner, the Marischal College Quad is where you’ll find the artisan market. It’s packed with local makers selling everything from handmade jewelry to unique home décor and delicious Scottish treats.
The whole place smells incredible— probably because of all of the haggis wraps, wood-fired pizza, and sugary baked goods drifting through the air.
This one feels less like a touristy market and more like a big community celebration, which is part of what makes it so special.
🔥Hot tip: Get to the Quad market early in the day if you’ve got your eye on something handmade—locals know the good stuff sells out fast.
Also, skating at sunset is extra pretty here, with the lights reflecting off the surrounding granite buildings.

4. Blair Castle, Glamis & Cawdor Castle Christmas Fairs
📍Dates & Locations:
- Blair Castle – Blair Atholl, Highland Perthshire | November 21st-23rd, 2025 | Inside the ballroom and Banvie Hall.

- Cawdor Castle – Near Inverness | December 13th-14th, 2025 | In the courtyard and surrounding grounds.
🎄What is it:
If Christmas in a fairy tale was real, it would probably look like one of these castle markets. Each one comes with its own mix of twinkling lights, historic charm, and that feeling you get when you’re somewhere truly special.
You can wander through grand halls filled with handmade gifts, sip something warm as you browse local crafts, and soak in the glow of centuries-old stone walls dressed up for the holidays.
These markets are smaller and more intimate than the big city ones, which means more time to chat with the makers, fewer crowds, and a slower pace that makes the whole experience feel even more magical.
Christmas Market Hot Tips:
🔥 Blair Castle: Go early—first thing in the morning has such a peaceful feel, and you’ll get your pick of artisan goods before crowds drift in.
🔥 Glamis Castle: Parking isn’t included in ticket prices—plan to arrive early and grab a spot close by to avoid a long walk in the cold.
🔥 Cawdor Castle: Live music and festive food are a big part of the experience— check the schedule before you go, then start with some bites and tunes, and wander the stalls once you’re cozy and warmed up.

5. Oban Winter Festival
📍Location: Oban, on Scotland’s west coast. The festival spreads across the town center, the harbor, and a few cozy indoor venues.
📅 Dates: November 21st – November 30th, 2025.
🎄What is it:
Oban’s Winter Festival feels like a big community Christmas party that the whole town’s invited to—and you’re welcome too! Oban is so special, and, believe me, experiencing it during the holidays is everything you’ve dreamed about when you’ve thought of Christmas in Scotland.
For ten days, you get twinkling lights, street music, and mulled wine to kick off Christmas in the crisp November air.
There’s a reindeer parade (yes, real reindeer), a ceilidh that will have you dancing in no time, craft markets full of local treasures, and even quirky traditions like haggis hurling (lol- no, seriously!).
At night, the harbor sparkles under the lights, and you can wander between food stalls serving everything from seafood chowder to mince pies. It’s festive, friendly, and full of small-town charm— not to be missed!
🔥Hot Tip: Check the event schedule before you go. Many of the highlights—like the reindeer parade or the ceilidh—only happen on certain days, so it’s worth timing your visit to catch the ones you don’t want to miss.

6. Traquair House Christmas Fayre
📍Location: Traquair House, Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders.
📅Dates: November 30th– December 1st, 2025.
🎄What is it:
Traquair House already feels like stepping back in time, but at Christmas, there’s even more of that Victorian magic.
The rooms and courtyard fill with stalls selling handmade gifts, festive foods, and seasonal treats, as well as live music, chestnuts roasting, and sometimes even puppet shows for the kids.
It’s small and charming, and historically impressive – definitely worth the drive.
🔥 Hot Tip: Bring cash—some of the smaller stalls don’t take cards, and you won’t want to miss out on that perfect gift or homemade tablet.

7. Logie Steading Christmas Market (near Inverness)
📍Location: Near Forres, Moray, about 30 minutes from Inverness.
📅Dates: December 7th-8th, 2025.
🎄What is it
This market in Inverness has a lovely, tucked-away feel that makes it worth the trip. Inside the historic steading buildings, you’ll find stalls selling handmade crafts, local produce, and unique homewares.
The relaxed pace means you can take your time chatting with makers and picking out thoughtful gifts. The cozy café is perfect for warming up with coffee and cake, and the surrounding countryside gives it a peaceful, festive charm you won’t find in a busy city market.
🔥Hot Tip: Take a wander through the grounds after shopping—there’s a riverside walk nearby that’s especially pretty on a crisp winter day.

8. Drumlanrig Castle Christmas Fair
📍Location: Thornhill, Dumfries & Galloway.
📅Dates: December 14th-15th, 2025
🎄What is it:
Drumlanrig Castle is breathtaking on its own, but at Christmas it’s even more impressive. The fair takes place inside a heated marquee on the grounds, filled with artisan stalls selling beautiful crafts, jewellery, and gourmet treats.
It’s a more spacious, laid-back market than most, so you can browse without feeling rushed—and the castle backdrop makes every moment feel like you’ve stepped into a Christmas card.
🔥Hot Tip: Wear warm layers—you’ll be in a marquee, so it’s sheltered but can still get chilly if you’re browsing for a while.

9. Bowhouse Christmas Market
📍Location: East Neuk of Fife, between St Monans and Elie.
📅Dates: December 14th-15th, 2025.
🎄What is it:
Bowhouse is a total treat if you’re into good food and a lively, local vibe. This isn’t your typical Christmas market—it’s more of a festive foodie haven.
The old barn-style space is packed with stalls selling everything from artisan cheese and craft beer to handmade chocolates and preserves. You’ll also find a few craft and gift stalls, but the real draw here is tasting your way around the place while chatting with the producers.
It’s warm, bustling, and has that community feel where everyone seems to know each other—which makes it really easy to feel at home, even if you’re just visiting.
🔥 Hot Tip: Go hungry and take your time—sampling is part of the fun, and you’ll definitely leave with a few edible Scottish souvenirs.

10. The Christmas Shopping Fair at Stirling Castle
📍Location: Stirling Castle, Stirling.
📅Dates: December 5th, 2025.
🎄What is it:
For one day only, Stirling Castle transforms into a festive shopping haven (gah, it’s incredible!!). The Great Hall fills with stalls selling beautifully made crafts, artisan gifts, and tempting local food and drink.
The atmosphere is cozy, but buzzing, with the sound of carols and the scent of spiced treats drifting through the air.
