In this blog post, I’m sharing my expertise and experience to help you pick the best Loch Ness tour from Edinburgh so you can experience the magic of Nessie—the Loch Ness Monster—and the stunning Scottish Highlands while staying in Edinburgh.
Taking a Loch Ness tour from Edinburgh is one of the most popular things to do when visiting Scotland. Set in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, Loch Ness is a breathtakingly scenic destination that’s worth the trip.
Of course, Loch Ness is best known for its legendary inhabitant, Nessie, the mysterious sea creature said to dwell in Scotland’s deepest loch. This folklore has been around for over 1,000 years, capturing the imagination of visitors who can’t resist the idea of spotting Nessie themselves.
Since Loch Ness is quite a journey from Edinburgh, getting there on your own can be tricky. That’s why I recommend the full day Loch Ness tour described below so you get to see as much as possible and the trip is as easy and epic as possible. While I haven’t been on this specific tour, I’ve experienced everything the Full-Day Loch Ness Tour offers, and I truly believe it’s the best option for those staying in Edinburgh.

Looking for the best Loch Ness Tour from Edinburgh? This full-day tour to the Scottish Highlands, Loch Ness, and Glencoe is the perfect option for you.
This tour has over 5,000 positive reviews, easily making it one of the best day trips from Edinburgh. And, trust me, you will see a TON on this guided tour. I’ve seen it all and I really do recommend it! It is really well priced, and although it is a large group tour, you get a lot of bang for your buck.
You leave Edinburgh by coach, and meet the group in front of Malmaison Hotel before 8 am. Since this tour is so long, the departure is very punctual, so don’t be late! You’ll spot royal palaces and even a castle on the way to your first stop in Callander.
And as is the tradition in Scotland, the guide will teach you about the history of the places and people in each area through storytelling. This town is right before the Highlands, and you’ll get to wander for a little before continuing on to Glencoe.
On the way lets hope there are some Hairy Coos along the way so you can take a selfie with one! Along the way make sure to look out at the beautiful scenery since you’ll go through Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
In Glencoe you’ll stop to see the haunting scenery where Scotland’s most shocking massacre took place. I love that this tour includes the hills in Glencoe since they are one of my favorite parts of Scotland!
Next you’ll pass by Fort Williams, before venturing on to the highland village of Fort Augustus. This charming town in the Highlands is located right on the shores of Loch Ness, the home of the Loch Ness Monster, Nessie.
It’s a cute postcard-perfect Highland village and you can either choose to walk the village to check out its charming Caledonian Canal lock system, or take a 1-hour boat cruise around the beautiful Loch Ness to see it all from the water. The tour doesn’t include the cruise, so you’ll want to bring 20£ cash per person if you decide to take it. Keep your eyes peeled for Nessie!
After that you’ll get to stop at the Commando Memorial, and pass by Cairngorm National Park before stopping at Pitlochry to check out the magnificent scenery.
What I love most about this tour is that you’re not just seeing Loch Ness. Sure, you’ll check this major Scottish site off your list…but you’ll also get a taste of the beautiful Scottish countryside.
Instead of just searching for Nessie, you’ll get the chance to explore the towns of the Highlands and pass by some of the incredible sights in the area. It is definitely a full day, but it really does provide an amazing taste of Scotland.
Taking the boat cruise and seeing the legend of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, up close and personal was so worth it for me! We loved tracking the waters (using the sonar) to see if we could find her!
“Colin was amazing as a tour guide/driver. He was very funny, and I learned a lot about Scottish history on the tour, while also gaining an appreciation of the Highlands from a real Highlander! Would definitely recommend this beautiful trip. While long, it didn’t feel it at all!”

This tour runs year-round, making it the perfect way to explore the highlands and Loch Ness no matter what season it is.
A highlight of this day trip is the experienced “Hairy Coo” Driver/Guide, who makes sure that the trip is filled with fun and interesting stories…from a local’s perspective!
It’s important to know thought that there are no bathrooms on the bus, but that regular comfort breaks are scheduled during the day. This tour is only for children over 7, and because of the tight schedule, a packed lunch is recommended for the day.
