25 Best Edinburgh Souvenirs: Local Gifts from Scotland
If you’re anything like me, half the fun of travelling is finding the perfect souvenirs to bring home. And let me tell you, Edinburgh does not disappoint in that department.
The best Edinburgh souvenirs range from unique Scottish items that have been around for centuries to quirky local finds you won’t see anywhere else, and even some things you can find in a regular old grocery store.
During my trips to Edinburgh, I’ve definitely made my fair share of souvenir mistakes along the way (looking at you, overpriced tartan scarf that fell apart after one wash). But I’ve also discovered a few things that I reach for all the time and manage to remind me of Scotland constantly.
So, I wanted to put together this list of the best Edinburgh souvenirs based on what I’ve actually bought, loved, and gifted over the years.
Whether you’re shopping for yourself, your family, or that one friend who’s impossible to buy for, I’ve got you covered. These are the real deal: authentic Scottish products that are worth every penny (or pence, I should say) and that’ll remind you of your trip for years to come.

25 Great Edinburgh Souvenirs
1. Edinburgh Rock
No, youโre not taking a real rock home- lol. Edinburgh Rock is a local candy that makes a perfect souvenir to bring home for kids!
Edinburgh Rock looks a little bit like candy sticksโฆexcept itโs way better. Itโs soft, crumbly, and kind of just melts in your mouth. And, of course, itโs sweet (like, really sweet), but thatโs part of the charm.
Youโll spot it all over the Royal Mile, usually in those pastel colors that look like something straight out of a candy shop from the 1950s.
2. Scottish Tablet
If you havenโt had tablet yet, youโre missing out. I stumbled upon it by accident during my last trip, and I am not sure I could ever go without it now- ha!
Tablet is often compared to fudge, but, hear me outโฆitโs better! (I know- I said what I said). Tablet is a sugary and fudge-like, but it is a bit more dry and has a harder texture than fudge. I also find it to be sweeter.
You can pick up tablet at many bakeries and gift shops around Edinburgh- the homemade kind is the best!

3. Shortbread
The shortbread you get in the US is not the same as the shortbread in Scotland, so you must bring some back for when that craving hits!
Nothing hits the spot like some of these classic buttery biscuits with a cup of tea. Itโs the closest youโll get to Scotland from home, anyway.
You can find shortbread all over the city, with a particularly large selection at the Edinburgh Castle gift shop. All in all, shortbread is the perfect Edinburgh souvenir to bring home!

4. Harris Tweed Products
Harris Tweed is one of the best, high-quality Edinburgh souvenirs that you can bring home. The options are pretty much endless, with jackets, accessories, handbags, and so many other things available for purchase.
The tartan styles in all sorts of colors will stand out, reminding you instantly of your trip to Scotland.
Authentic Harris Tweed items, such as jackets and accessories, are showcased at the Scottish Textiles Showcase. โ
โญPsst: If you’re looking for something fun to do AND trying to find the perfect souvenir, participate in an Islander Handbag Making Workshop!
This was such a fun thing to do in Edinburgh, and my bag (pictured above before I assembled it) came out beautifully! I love it!
5. Cashmere Scarves
I am of the firm belief that you can never have too many cashmere scarves- and also of the opinion that you can never have too much tartan and plaid.
Wellโฆthe cashmere blankets are a little harder to bring home in a suitcase. Instead, grab one of the countless scarves that you can find all over the city.
You can find them in pretty much any shop on the Royal Mile, including the Edinburgh Woollen Mill. Often, these scarves are on a special sale, so good luck resisting the urge to buy one in every color (because I pretty much do- ha!).

6. Tartan Kilts
Find me a souvenir more elite than a Tartan KiltโฆIโll wait. Nothing, and I mean nothing, screams Scotland like a Tartan Kilt. If I could convince my husband to wear one, weโd have a thousand at my home- seriously.
Traditional kilts are available at the Tartan Weaving Mill and other stores throughout Edinburgh, and they are such a unique and beautiful gift.
7. Quaich
Looking for a souvenir thatโs more than just a knick-knack that sits on a shelf? You need a quaich. A quaich is a traditional two-handled cup that Scots have used for centuries to share a drink (usually whiskyโฆ surprise, surprise) as a sign of friendship and trust.
I love it because itโs both practical and symbolic. Unlike other souvenirs, you can actually use it at home to toast with friends, or just let it sit on a shelf as your classy reminder that you once drank like a Scot.
Youโll find them all over the Royal Mile in every size imaginable, from tiny ones that fit in your palm to big, ceremonial versions thatโll make you feel like royalty.

8. Scottish Whisky
One does not simply go to Edinburgh and not bring back whisky. At least, not in my family!
A visit to the Royal Mile Whiskies shop offers a good selection of Scotch whiskies, but you can find them just about everywhere!
Rest assured that you cannot go wrong with Scottish whisky as a souvenir from your time in Edinburgh. My personal favorite to bring back is Caol Ila, but thatโs just because I fell in love with it in Inverness and canโt look back ๐
9. Gin from Local Distilleries
I know, I know โ everyone thinks of whisky first when they think of Scotland. But hear me outโฆ Edinburgh has an incredible gin scene that deserves just as much attention.
From Edinburgh Gin to Pickeringโs, youโll find creative flavors that make perfect souvenirs (and are way easier to slip into your suitcase than a full kilt).
You can grab a bottle at plenty of shops, but the Johnnie Walker Whisky Shop on Princes Street also carries exclusive blends and fun collaborations with local distilleries. Basically, if youโre a gin fan, Edinburgh is a great place to grab some!
10. Smoked Salmon
Scottish smoked salmon is one of those souvenirs you might not really think to bring home, but itโs delicious. However, youโll need to plan ahead for how to bring it home.
Most shops that sell it (like House of Bruar or Valvona & Crolla) offer vacuum-sealed packs that are safe to travel with and can stay cool for a while.
If youโre flying internationally, you can also grab it at the airport right before you go. The Edinburgh Airport duty-free shops usually have options that are travel-ready and meet customs rules.
11. Heather Honey
If you want to bring home a taste of the Scottish Highlands without lugging back a suitcase full of whisky, heather honey is where it’s at. And, no, itโs not just regular honey. This Scottish version has a deep, floral flavor that regular honey just can’t compete with.
This is because heather honey comes from bees that pollinate the purple heather covering Scotland’s hills and moors, and it’s only harvested for a short window each year. That means it’s kind of a big deal here.
You can find it at specialty food shops around Edinburgh, like Valvona & Crolla on Elm Row, or even at some of the market stalls. It’s perfect for bringing home as a gift (or keeping entirely to yourselfโno judgment). Just drizzle it on your morning toast or stir it into tea, and you’ll instantly be transported back to Scotland.

12. Scottish Clan Crests & Tartan Accessories
If you have Scottish ancestry or want a meaningful keepsake, consider a Scottish clan crest badge, tartan scarf, or family name plaque as a souvenir from Edinburgh.
There are so many ways to bring home a family crest item; I personally love the Fraser clan crest that I bought. Mine is a brooch and is the perfect accessory for keeping my tartan scarf tied.
In Edinburgh, many crest items are available at The Heritage of Scotland and The Tartan Weaving Mill near Edinburgh Castle.
13. Handmade Pottery
If youโre looking for an Edinburgh souvenir thatโs a little more unique, you should definitely be on the hunt for some handmade pottery.
Stunning, unique ceramic pieces crafted by local artisans are available at the Scottish Design Exchange. While these might be a little harder to get home in one piece than your average gift, they make beautiful statement pieces, and you definitely canโt get them just anywhere!

14. Highland Cow Stuffies
There was no shot that I was going home to my little boys without a hairy coo! I mean, how could I pass that up?!?
Adorable plush versions of Scotland’s coos are available at various souvenir shops all around the city. Sometimes, you can even find ones that have a bagpipes and a button and play music when pressed.
And, if youโre not into a Highland cow stuffed animal, there are also a bunch of Nessie ones floating around!

16. Handmade Soaps or Skincare
If you need something that wonโt take up a ton of room and isnโt a liquid that has to go in a checked bag, artisanal soaps are such a good pick. Youโll find bars infused with local scents like heather, whisky, and even Highland lavender at craft markets and small boutiques across the city.
One of my favorite spots is Edinburgh Skincare Co. on Victoria Street (for both soaps and for skincare).
It might be something you hadnโt thought of, but I love the idea of trying new soaps, and so do so many other people!

17. Scottish Storytelling Books
I am always looking for new books to bring home, and I love it when they are legends and tales from the places I visit.
Scotland has so many beautiful collections of traditional Scottish tales and myths, and they are easily available at the Scottish Storytelling Centre or bookstores around the city.
Some of my favorites to bring home are ones around Greyfriarโs Bobby, the Loch Ness Monster, or the Kelpies! Theyโre perfect for adults and kids alike.
18. Edinburgh Festival Memorabilia
If youโve been to Edinburgh during festival season, you already know what a whirlwind it is. Between the Fringe, the International Festival, and street performers on every corner, the whole city feels like chaos.
You can find souvenirs from these events at the Edinburgh Festival Center and at local shops or pop-ups around the city when the festivals are running.
From posters and pins to tote bags and limited-edition prints, theyโre a great way to bring a little bit of that festival energy home with you.โ
19. Scottish Playing Cards or Games
If you’re looking for something fun and a little different, Scottish-themed playing cards or traditional games are a solid pick.
I’ve seen playing cards with tartans, thistles, castles, and even Highland cows on them- my favorite ones have a bagpiper in full Highland dress in them. And, Iโll admit, theyโre quite the conversation starter at my house- lol!
You can also find traditional Scottish games like Bannockburn (a strategy game about the famous battle) or even sets for teaching Gaelic phrases. They’re fun, easy to pack, and actually useful when you get home.
Look for them at bookshops, the Scottish Storytelling Centre, or gift shops around the Royal Mile. They make great gifts for kids, adults, or anyone who appreciates a souvenir they can actually do something with.

20. Bagpipes (Or Bagpipe Ornaments)
Okay, so maybe you’re not ready to commit to learning the actual bagpipes (fair), but you can still bring a little piece of that Scottish sound home with you.
I mean, who goes to Scotland and doesnโt want a set of bagpipes, right? And if youโre into thatโฆwhy would I stop you?
But, instead of lugging a huge set home with me, I went with a smaller versionโฆand itโs perfect.
Miniature bagpipe ornaments are everywhere in Edinburgh, and they’re really adorable. Some are tiny enough to hang on a Christmas tree, while others are a bit bigger and make great desk decorations or shelf pieces.
You’ll find them at pretty much any souvenir shop on the Royal Mile, seriously.
21. Heathergems Jewelry
Okay, so this might be one of the coolest souvenirs I’ve come across. Heathergems are made from actual Scottish heather stemsโyes, the purple flowers (plants?) that are all over the hills of Scotland.
Since theyโre made from legitimate heather blooms, no two pieces are the same. Theyโre all different colors and patterns, which I love. Depending on which piece you choose, you could end up with one in shades of purple, pink, and even green.
You can find Heathergems at The Luckenbooth on the Royal Mile, and they make such a special gift. They make them into earrings, necklaces, brooches, and bracelets, so there’s something for everyone (and itโs really easy to pack!).

22. Sgian-Dubh
If you really want to commit to winning the Scottish souvenir game, you need a sgian-dubh. This is the small, single-edged knife that you’ll see tucked into the top of kilt socks when people are in traditional Highland dress. And, yes, it’s as cool as it sounds.
Now, before you panic about traveling with a knife, most of the ones sold as souvenirs are ceremonial and decorative. They’re more about honoring Scottish heritage than actual use, which makes them perfect for display at home (or, you know, for that one time you convince someone to wear full Highland dress).
You can find authentic sgian-dubhs at Heritage of Scotland on Lawnmarket. They come in different styles, but they all scream Scotland. Just maybe pack it in your checked luggage, yeah?
23. Irn-Bru
Did I save the best for last? Quite possibly, yes! The argument over Irn Bru is REAL!
But, the fact of the matter is that if you want to bring home something truly, unapologetically Scottish, you NEED Irn-Bru. This bright orange soda is basically Scotland’s national drink (after whisky, of course), and people here are obsessed with it.
It’s sweet, fizzy, and tastes likeโฆ well, it’s hard to describe. Some say bubblegum, some say citrus, some say “liquid sunshine (No, Iโm not joking).” You just have to try it.
You can grab it at pretty much any grocery store, corner shop, or even souvenir shops around Edinburgh. Fair warning: it’s a little heavy to lug around, but if you’ve got room in your suitcase, it’s such a fun and quirky Edinburgh souvenir. Plus, your friends back home will either love it orโฆ.tolerate it, I guess.
