This post will cover the easiest ways to get from Amsterdam Sloterdijk to Amsterdam Centraal. Plus, it includes some helpful tips for managing the train and tram systems in Amsterdam!
During my last trip to Amsterdam, I finally took a risk and stayed outside the city center. (Note: I would not recommend you do this if it is your first time visiting- stay in central Amsterdam near most of the must-see attractions in the city!).
Why stay outside the center city, you ask? Well, accommodation is much cheaper in areas like Sloterdijk than they are in the canal ring of Amsterdam. But, in order to stay in Sloterdijk, you have to know how to get from Amsterdam Sloterdijk to Amsterdam Centraal- because that’s where the party is!
After staying in Sloterdijk and taking the train into Centraal, I can confidently say that this transfer is much easier than I thought it’d be. Here’s what you need to know:
⭐The Easiest Way to Travel From Sloterdijk to Amsterdam Centraal

✅The best way to travel between Sloterdijk and Centraal is by train.
✅Trip Length: ~6 minutes

Traveling Between Amsterdam Sloterdijk and Centraal Station
On my recent trip, I was SO hesitant to stay in Sloterdijk, even though it was saving me literally hundreds of dollars. After all, it pays to be in the center of where the action is.
I was concerned that by staying outside the city center, I’d miss out on key time exploring and experiencing Amsterdam. After all, my husband and I only had a few days in Amsterdam this time around.
The good news: Traveling between Amsterdam Sloterdijk Station and Centraal Station is incredibly easy.
We ended up doing the trip between the two stations at least twice a day, and it truly could not have been easier. When it comes down to it, there are a few ways to travel between the two.

How to Get From Amsterdam Sloterdijk to Amsterdam Centraal
Here are the top three ways to get from Sloterdijk into the capital of Central Amsterdam easily:
1. Train From Amsterdam Sloterdijk to Amsterdam Centraal Station
The train is by far the easiest way to get from Sloterdijk to Centraal. It is also the quickest, taking between 5-6 minutes, with trains running about every 5 minutes- even early in the morning or during off-peak times.
There are a few hotels (like the one we stayed at) that are within 5 minutes walking distance of the train station.
✅ Tickets (And Getting Through the Gate) at Sloterdijk Station
Once you walk into the train station, you’ll need to tap in to get through the gates to the train platforms.
We found that the easiest way to do this was to choose a tap-to-pay card or our Apple Pay wallets. This way, we just tapped at the entrance to the gate and carried on. Once you tap out in Centraal, the transport system will automatically calculate the lowest fare- no need for a physical ticket!
In contrast, if you do want to buy a ticket, you can purchase through the NS website or app and simply scan that at the station gates.
⭐If you are purchasing the Iamsterdam City Card for your trip, it also includes free public transport! Might be worth it if you are staying outside the city! Read my article comparing the benefits of the city card!
✅ How much is a ticket from Sloterdijk Station to Amsterdam Centraal?
A ticket from Sloterdijk to Centraal cost us about €2.60 ($2.76) each way.
This price is the same whether you purchase online or tap in and out with a payment card.
Don’t worry! All of the signs in the train station also have English translations, and the trains also speak in Dutch and English!

2. Amsterdam Sloterdijk to Amsterdam Central by Tram
There is a tram that runs from Amsterdam Sloterdijk to Amsterdam Centraal.
This might be a better option if you are looking to go to the center city of Amsterdam, but not necessarily Amsterdam Central Station.
Tram lines run more throughout the city, giving you easier access to places like the Museumplein (Rijksmuseum) and Leidseplein areas.
Tram line 19 will run from Sloterdijk into central Amsterdam, dropping you off on the outer canal ring near Negen Straatjes (further south than Centraal Station).
⭐Take tram 19 from the Amsterdam Station Sloterdijk stop to the Amsterdam, Marnixtraat stop. This journey takes about 14 minutes and costs between $2-3.
3. Sloterdijk Station to Central Amsterdam by Bus
Outside Sloterdijk Station, you can also find a bus that will run to Amsterdam Central. However, by the time you walk to the bus station (~9 minutes), you’ll have wasted much more time.
Therefore, I do not recommend this option, as it’s not as time-efficient, and it really wouldn’t save money comparatively.
Bus Line 22 runs from outside Amsterdam Sloterdijk station. Travel from Amsterdam, La Guardiaweg station to Amsterdam, Nassauplein station. The journey takes about 10 minutes (+8 for the walk).
