Is Amsterdam the Capital of the Netherlands?
TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF AMSTERDAM IS THE CAPITAL OF THE NETHERLANDS? It IS!
Gah- I love Amsterdam. Literally, it’s like my most favorite place in the world. I spend time in Amsterdam any chance I get…and my husband is trying to convince me not to move there.
Amsterdam is a huge hub for tourists, and it attracts millions of visitors each year. It’s famous for having amazing places to visit like the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, and, of course, the Red Light District.
You might find yourself asking: is Amsterdam the capital of the Netherlands? Long story short, yes, Amsterdam IS the capital of the Netherlands.
But, it’s somehow a common question that people misunderstand, so I’m here to answer it!
Is Amsterdam the Capital of the Netherlands?
Let’s get straight to the point…yes, Amsterdam is the official capital of the Netherlands.
However, while that might sound easy enough...it’s a bit more complicated than all that.
The reason many people get confused is because, typically, a nation’s capital is where its largest executive or parliamentary branches are. In layman’s terms, where the government is.

In the case of the Netherlands, the Dutch government (including parliament and the Supreme Court) is located in the Hague- aka Den Haag. It’s even the seat of the International Court of Justice.
So, typically, we might expect the capital of the Netherlands to be the Hague. But, it’s NOT.
And while the main government seats are not in Amsterdam, as might be typical of capital cities, Amsterdam is easily the Netherlands’ largest city. With a population of almost 1 million people, Amsterdam is also the capital city of the Netherlands.
Was Amsterdam Always the Capital of the Netherlands?
Actually, no! The reality is that the capital of the Netherlands has been a dispute that has deep historical origins. Initially, the Hague was the original capital of Holland.
Formed in the 13th century, Amsterdam gradually grew in popularity and influence. By the 16th century, it was one of the largest cities in the nation and a hub of trade and economic power, ushering in the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century.

From the 17th century, there was much political divide in the Netherlands. When the Dutch Republic fell in the 18th century, the largest city, Amsterdam, soon overtook the status as the capital of the Netherlands.
While some people acknowledge 1813 as the time Amsterdam became its capital, the reality is that Amsterdam was only officially (in writing) made the capital of the Netherlands via the Constitution in 1983- the 20th century!
Does the Netherlands Have Two Capitals?
No, the Netherlands does not have two capitals. The only capital of the Netherlands is the city of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam is the cultural and economic center of the country. And, while much of the Dutch government resides in the Hague, it is not the official capital of the Netherlands.
There is only one capital of the Netherlands, and that is Amsterdam.

Is Amsterdam the Capital of Holland?
Yes, Amsterdam is also the capital of Holland!
Many people call the Netherlands by its prior name- Holland. However, Holland actually refers to two of the provinces within the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is made up of 12 separate provinces. Two of those: Noord-Holland (North Holland) and Zuid-Holland (South Holland) make up Holland as we now know it.
Since the official Netherlands capital city is Amsterdam, that means it is also the capital of what we consider Holland.
Does Holland Have Two Capitals?
Complicated answer! Yes- in a way, “Holland” has two capitals.
Let me break it down like this… I mentioned above that there are 12 provinces that make up the Netherlands. Each of these provinces, then, has its own capital and seat of lower-level government.
Since there are two provinces with the name Holland: Noord-Holland (North Holland) and Zuid-Holland (South Holland), you could argue that Holland has two capitals.
In reality, the capital of Noord-Holland is Amsterdam. And the capital of Zuid-Holland is the Hague. Overall, since the capital of the entire country is Amsterdam, that would win out as the official “capital” of Holland.
However, this is likely where another piece of the confusion comes in! It doesn’t help that the entire country of the Netherlands used to be called Holland, either- lol!
