Complete Captain Jack’s Canal Cruise Review: Is It Worth It?
It’s no secret that Amsterdam is one of my favorite places in the world; I travel there literally as often as I can.
And, of course, that means that I have taken my fair share of canal cruises over the years. You can’t just…come to Amsterdam and not see the city from the canals, you know?
But, while I’d definitely suggest taking a canal boat tour, there are so many that are tourist traps. I have literally fallen asleep, head down on the table, while I tried my hardest to stay awake listening to a recording with little earbuds. It was terrible.
Thankfully, the most recent one that I took, Captain Jack’s is none of that. It’s engaging, unique, and 100% fantastic.
After spending 90 minutes laughing, snacking, seeing the sights, AND meeting Captain Jack himself, both my husband and I can say, without hesitation, that we would absolutely recommend Captain Jacks.
Read on for all the details on why I would recommend it and whether or not this is the right fit for you:
🏆 Short on time? No problem!
The short answer is YES, I definitely recommend
Captain Jack’s All-Inclusive Canal Cruise It’s the best canal tour in Amsterdam!

Captain Jack Amsterdam Canal Cruise Review
There’s more to a canal cruise than just the sights. The ambiance matters, the type of captain matters, and the content matters, too.
Here’s the breakdown on all things Captain Jack’s Canal Cruise:

What is Included: 90 Minute All-Inclusive Canal Cruise
Captain Jack’s canal cruise is truly all-inclusive—and not in the gimmicky way.
You’re on the boat for about 90 minutes, and during that time, you’ll get unlimited drinks (yes, including beer, wine, and soft drinks) plus snacks like Dutch cheese and crackers.
It’s a small group setup, usually no more than 20 people, which keeps it from feeling overcrowded and touristy.
Your guide—whether it’s Captain Jack himself or one of his equally fun teammates—will share stories, history, and fun facts the whole time.
Honestly, it feels less like a scripted tour and more like hanging out with a super knowledgeable local on a boat, which I loved.

What do you see on Skipper Jack’s Amsterdam Cruise?
An awesome part about a canal cruise with Skipper Jack is that you’ll see most of the major spots around the city that you might not want to walk to.
We floated past the Anne Frank House and Westerkerk, of course, but also the Skinniest House in Amsterdam (seriously, blink and you’ll miss it), the famously crooked canal houses, and the iconic Magere Brug, aka the Skinny Bridge.
You’ll cruise under the Seven Bridges of Reguliersgracht, which is one of the most photographed canal views in the city, and sail past the Lovers Bridge—legend says if you kiss someone while passing under it, you’ll be together forever.
There are also plenty of those classic Amsterdam drawbridges, beautiful old warehouses converted into homes, and even quirky houseboats lining the canals with rooftop gardens.
Captain Jack’s route gives you the perfect mix of famous landmarks, lesser-known gems, and those “wait, what is that?” stories to tell for later.
You’ll get a really well-rounded look at the city and because the boat is small and open-air, you can actually see everything without a roof blocking your view or a crowd in your way.

Captain Jack Himself & His Team
Captain Jack isn’t just a name on the website—he’s a real person, and if you’re lucky, he’ll be the one steering the boat when you hop on.
From the second we met him, he made us feel like old friends. He greeted everyone who was lining up for a tour, cracked jokes without missing a beat, and made everyone feel welcomed instantly.
Captain Jack didn’t even captain our boat, specifically, but he left a massively positive impression on us just in the few minutes we did meet him before boarding.
So, I can confidently say that even if you don’t get Captain Jack himself, his team is just as fantastic. Our guide was born and raised in Amsterdam and had that perfect mix of storytelling, dry humor, and insider knowledge.
It’s clear that everyone working on these cruises actually loves what they do—it shows. They’re laid-back, welcoming, and genuinely fun to be around. You won’t feel like just another tourist on board—you’ll feel like you’re part of the crew
Is Captain Jack’s Canal Cruise Worth the Money?
When I first booked Captain Jack’s all-inclusive cruise at around €40–45 (about $41–47)—comparable to other high-end small-boat tours—I wondered: is the price really justified?
The answer: absolutely.
Here’s why:
- Price vs. value: Most standard canal cruises cost €20–€25, but they typically include nothing more than a roof and pre-recorded audio (trust me, I’ve done them…they’re brutal. I have literally fallen asleep on one).
Captain Jack’s tour gives you 90 minutes, a live, local guide, unlimited drinks (beer, wine, sodas), and typical Dutch snacks. - Personalized Experience: Boats host only 20–24 people, keeping things intimate and allowing room for real conversation, questions, and photo ops.
- High satisfaction ratings: Reviews across Viator, Tripadvisor, and GetYourGuide average between 4.7 and 4.9 stars. Guests rave about “comfortable, fun, and great commentary,” praising the guides and saying it’s “well worth it”
Even those familiar with other canal tours say Jack’s stands out for authenticity and atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a memorable, personalized canal experience—and value quality, atmosphere, and that insider touch—Captain Jack’s cruise is worth every penny.
At the end of the day: Yes—Captain Jack’s cruise is more than just “worth it”—it’s the one I wholeheartedly recommend when someone asks, “Which canal cruise should I take?”

Conclusion: Review of Captain Jack’s Canal Cruise
If it’s not already obvious, I’m a huge fan of this tour. Captain Jack’s canal cruise took everything I thought a canal cruise in Amsterdam was supposed to be—and actually delivered on it. It was fun without being cheesy, informative without being boring, and personal without trying too hard.
Whether it’s your first time in Amsterdam or your fifth, this cruise strikes the perfect balance of sightseeing, storytelling, and just…chilling on a boat with a drink in hand. It’s affordable, memorable, and the kind of experience you’ll be telling your friends about when you get home.
So if you’re on the fence—book it. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
